Mpumalanga Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Mandla Msibi has called for tougher action against illegal land merchants who sell stands on riverbanks and endanger lives during times of torrential rain
Msibi said there were thugs selling stands in Tekwane South outside Mbombela. Some houses built on the banks of the Crocodile River in this township were submerged in water due to the river bursting at the seams.
Msibi added that there needed to be proper planning between traditional leaders and municipalities when it came to the allocation of land for human settlements. Government has decided that children, especially in Nkomazi, must not go to school because of bridges being submerged in floods and impassable roads.“We are waiting for the rains to subside so that detailed and specific designs can be developed to determine the exact amount needed to fix the damages. The damage could be more than this estimate,” he said.
“We appeal for patience and cooperation from tour operators, tourists and drivers within the KNP during this period to minimise any risk to human life and infrastructure. We are trying our level best to open a passage for visitors to continue enjoying the park during this rainy period. Gravel roads in the south of the park remain closed for now and are being monitored constantly and they will be opened as soon as they are deemed safe,” said Oscar Mthimkhulu, KNP managing executive.
