Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko has assigned a task team to assist with the postmortems backlog at the Hillbrow Mortuary. This is after hundreds of families were left frustrated due to a shortage of pathologists. Another task team. What are your thoughts?

NEWS

City Press reported that dozens of families had reached out to the media regarding their demands for the bodies of their loved ones, after almost two weeks of waiting to conduct burials.Nkomo-Ralehoko said the department of health was focused on repositioning Gauteng pathology services. We would like to sincerely apologise for the inconvenience that the families have had to endure in their moment of grief, due to inefficiencies in the system. We are now remedying the situation. The MEC said the department had since appointed a provisional task team to assist with the soaring number of bodies being admitted across the province from July 24.

“At the Hillbrow facility alone, the move has resulted in 139 bodies being examined from July 24 to July 31. Out of the bodies that were examined, 96 have been claimed, while 43 are awaiting collection.“Currently there are no backlogs of postmortems in any of our mortuaries. This morning alone, 14 postmortems were conducted. Those bodies were admitted on Monday."

“It has come to our attention from our investigation that undertakers are scamming people of their money while using our facilities to store bodies and collect them on Fridays before the burial. As a result, they take the bodies to secondary storage where the bodies end up decomposing and the department is blamed for the decomposition.
