Mathematical calculations suggest an outbreak could affect between 40,000 and 160,000 people
Health bosses are warning families about the danger of measles amid fears London could see tens of thousands of cases.
Measles is a highly infectious disease that can lead to serious problems such as pneumonia, meningitis, and on rare occasions, long-term disability or death. Children are offered the first dose of the MMR vaccine which protects against measles, mumps and rubella when they turn one-years-old and the second dose at three years and four months.
Immunisations took a dip because of the disruption to health care caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. They also took a significant decline in the early 2000s after claims of a link between the MMR jab and autism. What are the symptoms of measles? Measles is a highly infectious viral illness, so anyone with symptoms is advised to stay at home and phone their GP or NHS 111 for advice, before visiting the surgery or A&E, to prevent the illness spreading further.Measles is passed to others in the droplets of coughs or sneezes and easily infects families and communities if children and adults are unvaccinated.
