), it seems as though everyone but his hairdresser has had a go. With the elegiacby Ronson, née Fussey, begins in 1971 when a Mrs Jones pops into the Beckenham branch of the Evelyn Paget hairdressing empire, wearing “a tweed skirt, with sensible shoes and the ever-present English cardigan”. Mrs Jones becomes a regular client – though not one on a first-name basis – and is eventually joined by her daughter-in-law Angela.

Suzi sleeps with Bowie once, six months later, during an evening that could be scripted by Mills & Boon: “the soft lighting is romantic and I let my inhibitions go as he undresses me”. She is aghast when Bowie, post-sex, cheerily mentions he’s going to tell his wife, adding “she expects it”. But to her lasting disappointment, Suzi is cut adrift just a few months later, shortly after Bowie dispenses with both Ziggy Stardust and his backing band, The Spiders from Mars.Life begins to look very different. Suzi marries Mick Ronson, who had abandoned his gardening job in Hull to lead The Spiders from Mars.
