Scott McTominay's impressive performance in Manchester United's derby victory showcased his attacking abilities and goal-scoring prowess.
Sunday’s derby was a match of two halves for Scott McTominay. The midfielder was allowed to roam further forward and proved to be a tricky customer for the visiting defenders when Manchester United countered before the half-time break.
The former Reds midfielder says he has seen the abilities of McTominay every day on the training pitch and that his work is finally paying off. Without that winning double, Ten Hag would have been under the cosh even more intensely right now. So while McTominay will insist he is fine playing anywhere on the pitch, he has a right to feel annoyed at his positional change in the defeat to City.
The question that follows is where he fits into Ten Hag’s plans long term. Some will be adamant he doesn’t and in fact, needs to leave. However, Bruno Fernandes aside, it’s hard to argue any other United midfielder has shone out above the rest. He is very much of the McTominay ilk but with way more promise and technique. He could well be the missing midfield link, but it would be unfair to place such pressure on an 18-year-old playing at one of the world’s biggest clubs.
