Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry both recorded hole-in-ones as they joined a pack of players within striking distance of first-round leader Russell Henley at the PGA Pebble Beach Pro-Am. McIlroy finished at six-under-par 66, while Lowry was also at six-under. Scottie Scheffler made his return after a hand injury and was three shots behind Henley.
Rory McIlroy kicked off his PGA Tour season with a spectacular hole-in-one during the first round of the PGA Pebble Beach Pro-Am tournament on Thursday. The 35-year-old golfer from Northern Ireland finished the day at six-under-par 66, just two shots behind the leader, Russell Henley . McIlroy's remarkable achievement came on the par-three 15th hole at Spyglass Hill. After a perfect 119-yard wedge shot from the tee, the ball landed directly in the hole.
'Honestly, it was lucky,' McIlroy commented. 'I don't see many balls nowadays go straight in the hole and stay in the hole. Pretty fortunate because it could have come out and went back in the water or do anything. It was a good swing, good wedge shot.'McIlroy's hole-in-one was the highlight of a flawless round that also included four birdies and 13 pars. He wasn't the only Irishman to achieve the feat on Thursday. Former British Open champion Shane Lowry also aced the 113-yard par-three seventh hole at Pebble Beach Golf Links. McIlroy and Lowry shared eighth place with five other players, all tied at six under par.Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler, making his comeback after a hand injury sustained during a Christmas dinner accident last month, started slowly with a bogey on the first hole at Spyglass Hill. However, he quickly found his rhythm, recording two birdies before the turn and another four on the back nine, finishing the day three shots behind the lead. Russell Henley, Scheffler's American compatriot, secured the first-round lead with a scorching eight-under-par 64 at Spyglass Hill. Henley reached the turn at four under after making four birdies on a bogey-free front nine, then dropped to seven under with birdies on the 10th, 11th, and 13th holes. While a bogey on the 14th slowed his momentum, a birdie-birdie finish on the 17th and 18th holes gave him a slender one-shot lead. 'I feel like today the course was gettable...it was a little less windy and rainy than I've played in years past,' Henley said. 'I was reading the greens well and hitting my lines.'The low-scoring opening round left a plethora of players within striking distance heading into Friday's second round. Austria's Sepp Straka, coming off a victory at the American Express in Palm Springs two weeks ago, was among six players tied for second place after shooting a seven-under-par 65, featuring eight birdies. Joining Straka in the chasing pack was England's Justin Rose, who carded a 65 on the Pebble Beach course, including four birdies in his final three holes to climb the leaderboard. Rose concluded his round with a clutch 25-foot birdie putt on the par-four 18th. Other players tied for second included Norway's Viktor Hovland and Denmark's Rasmus Hojgaard
