Ontario\u0027s ministry of transportation must develop a comprehensive cycling safety program – including in our schools.

The immediate response was a call for improved bike infrastructure. Without the accompanying bike safety education piece, however, all the “safety infrastructure and green paint” in the world will not protect a cyclist who does not realize the enormity and extraordinary danger of “large vehicle blind spots” and so rides in them, both at and through intersections. The area beside a truck , is aptly called the “death zone.

The downtown bike lanes, continuously disrupted by numerous truck loading and unloading zones, and underground parking lots, are equally dangerous to uneducated cyclists, who are unaware of the inherent risk of trucks entering and exiting and their vast blind spots. If the City of Ottawa and/or Ontario truly wish to impact and change road safety culture, I cannot reiterate enough the need for actual training, both in theory and in practice: providing knowledge and understanding for both cyclists , and motorists.

Children, adolescents and adults must learn and practise bike safety. As in The Netherlands, this basic life skill should be taught in primary school, and reinforced and tested in secondary school. By the age of 12, Dutch children are responsible cycling citizens, and are expected to ride their bikes to school. Our ministry of education needs to similarly incorporate cycling safety into the school curriculum. Furthermore, adult courses need to be inexpensive and readily available.
