Former President Trump could present a political dilemma for David McCormick's U.S. Senate campaign.

Republican David McCormick, right, is joined by his wife Dina Powell, left, as he arrives at the Heinz History Center to announce that he will enter Pennsylvania's U.S. Senate race and make his second bid for the office, this time to take on Democratic Sen. Bob Casey, Thursday, Sept. 21, 2023, in Pittsburgh. Businessman David McCormick is again running for a U.S. Senate seat from Pennsylvania but taking on Sen.

Democrats will try to tie McCormick to Trump, the GOP frontrunner for the presidential nomination, and all the well-covered political, legal and ethical baggage that comes with him. Casey will do well in Philadelphia and its neighboring so-called “collar” counties, Pittsburgh, Scranton and Erie, but will also be able to draw away a good portion of votes in red counties, Mikus predicted.

“There’s no clear path to winning for him,” said Young, a retired professor of politics and policy at Penn State-Harrisburg, who said McCormick’s only hope might be for a “godawful campaign” by Casey or Trump somehow not becoming the GOP nominee. On Friday, McCormick’s campaign released a list of political supporters that included all eight of Pennsylvania’s GOP U.S. House members, 23 members of the state House and Senate, as well as former 2022 Senate candidate Jeff Bartos, former PA GOP Chairman Rob Gleason, Republican National Committeewoman Christine Torretti of Indiana County and Committeeman Andy Reilly of Delaware County.

That, though, is unlikely to deter Democrats to stop attacking McCormick for his apparent tougher stances in the past, including a comment in a since-deleted YouTube video in which he called overturning Roe “a huge victory for the protection of life.”
