Former quarterback is vague when asked why he demanded a trade from Houston four months...
Cleveland Browns new quarterback Deshaun Watson listens to a question during a news conference at the NFL football team's training facility, Friday, March 25, 2022, in Berea, Ohio. Like any good politician who’s been prepped for an awkward, uncomfortable news conference, dodged a direct answer about why he demanded the Texans trade him after the 2020 season.
“The biggest thing, I think at the time, was we both were going in different directions,” Watson said. “And, so, for me to be able to accomplish the things I want to do, we started off doing it properly with my agency, then it led to the whole big situation. It was time for both of us to kind of part ways.”
Although he was exceptional in 2020 when the Texans finished 4-12, he wanted to win. He wanted to be part of a winning team as he had been in his second and third seasons with the Texans — AFC South titles in 2018 and 2019, including an overtime playoff victory over Buffalo. “For the circumstances in this situation, it’s hard to get too far into the details,” he said. “But like I said before, it was just a time for both of us to part ways. I was honest and straightforward with the organization. They were honest with me. We came to the conclusion that this was the best situation.”
Friday, Watson said nothing about being influenced by Easterby’s growing influence on hiring Caserio and Culley. He didn’t mention Easterby’s attempt to get more power over personnel after O’Brien was fired four games into that season.
