The project is expected to provide significant direct and indirect benefits to communities located in an area with significant unemployment levels.
MC Mining said on Monday its revenue per saleable tonne declined by 14% to US$75 per tonne in the three months to March 31, the third quarter of its financial year.
The company reiterated that its board had conditionally approved the phased development of the Makhado project in Limpopo, with construction of the first phase anticipated to commence in the third quarter of the calendar year 2019 and expected to yield 0.54 million tonnes per annum of hard coking coal and 0.57 million tonnes per annum of export quality thermal coal.
South Africa produces significant quantities of thermal coal but has a very limited domestic supply of high-quality metallurgical coal.

BUSINESS MAVERICK: Vedanta chairman may have his sights on Anglo, but a takeover will not be easyThe UK Telegraph reported on the weekend that Anglo American was girding itself for a potential takeover by Vedanta chairman and self-made Indian mining tycoon Anil Agarwal. This is no big surprise: Agarwal’s over 20% stake in the venerable South African mining company rests on a convertible bond instrument that matures in 2020, when the Anglo shares can be transferred to the lenders. That means Agarwal has to act, by either refinancing his stake or raising it. A takeover will not be easy, though there may be bankers who would back the attempt.
