JOHANNESBURG - Former President Thabo Mbeki says unless the African National Congress renews itself, he’s not prepared to campaign for the party ahead of next year’s elections
The former statesman was speaking during a dialogue at Unisa on Thursday night, hosted by the Thabo Mbeki African School of Public and International Affairs. Following a long hiatus after his ousting as president in 2009, Mbeki only started participating publicly at ANC events in 2019. However, he has criticised the party’s ability to follow through on commitments to cleanse itself, adding that he refuses to mislead people.“When you say I must go campaigning next year, to say to people vote ANC, how am I going to do that when I know very well that the branch of the ANC in this constituency is led by a criminal? It’s not possible to go say vote ANC, to vote for a criminal.”
