Pencils down, Mazda—you're already finished with the perfect next-gen Miata. This electric Iconic SP concept has a rotary range extender, too.
We know what you're thinking: This Mazda sports car concept, dubbed the"Iconic SP," practically reaches out of these photos, grabs your shoulders, and shakes you while screaming"MIATA!" Maybe it's the whole compact sports car vibe it's giving off, or the special new red paint holds some clues, if not some intriguing possibilities.
This blazing red sports car is powered by the brand's iconic rotary engine-spun range extender EV setup, meaning it's basically an electric car with a super smooth two-rotor rotary engine onboard that kicks in some extra electrons via a generator to extend the workable driving range . This same setup is available overseas inWhy go through the trouble of adding such a complex setup? Well, look at the MX-30 Mazda sent to the U.S.
It's a clever add-on for a small EV, too; typically, workable driving range requires EVs to be larger, their bigger footprints necessary to house all the batteries needed. A compact range extender can keep that battery size—and thus the overall vehicle size—down. The imagery Mazda provided for this story includes shots of its onboard range estimates, which work out to a neat 305 miles.
Are we going a little overboard with the fevered comparisons to today's Miata? Maybe. But remember, the Miata is Mazda's de-facto halo car since the RX-7 and RX-8 went away. But Mazda persists with the roadster, and says it will continue to offer the Miata even as powertrain technology evolves beyond gas-fed engines.
