Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke says Metro Vancouver’s Mayor’s Committee voted unanimously on Wednesday to support a motion in favour of Surrey retaining the RCMP as its municipal police force.
“The letter that is on its way to me is a letter requesting a decision, not about whether it should be Surrey police service or the RCMP,” Mike Farnworth told reporters in Victoria Thursday.
“The mayors’committee did not vote on a motion to keep the RCMP in Surrey as Mayor Locke claims,” said Coun. Doug Elford, noting it was only a plea for a resolution to the issue. “It’s disappointing to see Mayor Locke misrepresenting the facts in her press release,” said Coun. Mandeep Nagra. “We believe that public officials should be held to a high standard of transparency and accountability, and issuing false information for your own political agenda undermines that trust.Article contentThe Surrey policing issue was thrown into limbo in October 2022, when Locke was elected on a campaign promise to reverse predecessor McCallum’s creation of a Surrey Police Service.
Currently, SPS and RCMP officers are patrolling together, with two administrations costing the city more than it has budgeted for police services. This led to a 12.5-per-cent property tax increase in Surrey this year.
