Ana Bailão, Brad Bradford, Olivia Chow, Mitzie Hunter, Josh Matlow, and Mark Saunders discussed the critical social and economic challenges facing Toronto on Wednesday night at TMU. Here's our debate recap.

Moderator and Star city columnist Ed Keenan’s quick-fire round got perhaps the best shorthand for where the candidates stand on how they’d approach the next budget cycle: Does the city have a revenue or spending problem? Coun. Josh Matlow, Hunter, Chow, Bailão say revenue. Bradford and Saunders say spending.

Keenan also extracted a little levity in finding out what candidates love most about the city. In summary: people, diversity, food, access to opportunity, entrepreneurship, ravines and water.Matlow asked Saunders the opposite of the questions directed at Chow — if he is mayor what exactly will he cut to balance the budget — food nutrition programs for kids, shelter funding? Saunders said he will look at how the dollars are being spent now.
