City Council meeting in which Eric Johnson supports lowering taxes and reducing spending.

Over the last 10 years, Dallas’ budget has increased by about $1.7 billion. Broadnax’s proposed $4.63 billion budget, a $138 million bump from the current fiscal year, includes spending almost $70 million more on salaries for civilian staff in the upcoming fiscal year.

Property value growth is estimated at 10.5% more than the current fiscal year. With those skyrocketing property values in Dallas, homeowners’ total tax bills are likely to increase when compared to last year. While no tax rate was set in Wednesday’s meeting, council members agreed to set a tax rate “ceiling” that allows the city to collect taxes at a rate constituent with Broadnax’s budget proposal. The budget won’t be voted on and adopted until late September, and council members could still vote to lower the tax rate then, but, overall, they rebuffed Johnson’s and Mendelsohn’s plan to preliminarily set a ceiling on the tax rate such that no new revenue is collected.
