Mayne Island was perfect for us. It may be perfect for you as well, especially if you enjoy walking through mossy arbutus forests and along seaside trails. The island is an easy ferry ride from the Lower Mainland. It has fewer tourists and is quieter than other Gulf Islands. You can reach pretty much everywhere on the whole island within a 20-minute drive.
At the end of Edith Point Road, you can explore yet another peninsula, this one with magnificent views of Mount Baker. The smooth rock at the point again offers comfortable seating and great marine views. Then you can retrace your seaside steps, this time looking toward the North Shore Mountains, or you can complete the loop through the ferny forest.Article contentFor more of a challenge, try Mount Parke in the centre of the island, and hike up to the Halliday Ridge.
The Japanese Garden was created in honour of the Japanese farmers and fishers who lived and worked on Mayne Island between 1900 and 1942.With advice from Japanese gardening experts, they began by creating a lake and island out of a marshy area, then adding a pump house, stream, waterfall and bridges. Much volunteer work was involved, along with donated services from local contractors.
