On the edge of summer, D.C. shows spring at its peak.
As May ended and summer drew near, warm weather, blue skies and dry air joined on Friday in the D.C. area to create the sort of day that might be welcome in any week, any month, any place and any season. And it showed up here.
The 77-degree high was 3 degrees below the average high for Washington on the last day of May. But as specialists in Washington’s weather know well, even the delights of 70-degree temperatures may still be corrupted by the unpleasant presence of humidity. It was only to be expected that the sun would dominate Friday, as we drew within three weeks of the year’s longest day, the day of the solstice, the moment of strongest sunshine, the solar inauguration of summer.
