Coach Jason Kidd categorized Doncic as “day to day” after he rolled his ankle about three minutes into, and the 23-year-old’s pregame activity Saturday showed potential for a quicker recovery than past ankle sprains.
Doncic spent about 20 minutes on the Jazz’s Vivint Arena court Saturday, taking midrange, 3-point and foul shots to test his ankle about two days after rolling it on a Phoenix defender’s foot. He didn’t pivot, step back or land with high impact, but Doncic moved without a noticeable limp or other limitations.
After they play Detroit Monday, the Mavericks will face the Pelicans on Thursday in American Airlines Center to start a stretch of seven games against teams ahead of them in the Western Conference standings over their last eight beforeThough they beat the Suns with Doncic scoreless in three minutes before his injury, the Mavericks remain winless in full games without their superstar this season.
