Human rights campaigners and politicians — including an Ohio Democrat and a Republican — are calling on President Biden to declare TPS for Mauritania.

Houleye Thiam is a Mauritanian community leader pushing for temporary protected status for Black Mauritanians, who face human rights abuses at homeAmadou Ousmane Kane says that long before he moved into his current apartment, a stone’s throw from the Interstate 270 outerbelt on Columbus’ East Side, he was a slave in his homeland, Mauritania.

Kane eventually escaped slavery as a young man and fled Mauritania to Ivory Coast in 2005, where he lived with his wife and children before making his way, alone, to Brazil in 2019 and the U.S. in April 2022. Soon after crossing the border in California, Kane applied for asylum. But his case — likein America's backlogged immigration system — is still awaiting a hearing.

“I don’t sleep at night, I’m in distress. I miss my family, my wife, my children, and my parents,” Kane told The Dispatch.originally namedOhio is home to an estimated 8,000 Mauritanians — the largest population in the U.S. — according to Houleye Thiam, 43, a social worker and president of the Mauritanian Network for Human Rights, who lives on Columbus’ Far East Side.to President Biden and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in July 2022, calling for TPS for Mauritanians.
