Three cheers for Canada’s non\u002Dunionized, underappreciated bankers doing important and noble work
The investment banker is, of course, only one type of banker. Banks also employ loan underwriters, financial analysts, account managers, executives, auditors and many other types of professionals. But whatever the exact role, there is a common thread among bankers that adds significantly to the nobleness of those who work in their industry: the absence of unionization.
Meanwhile, in many other industries, the unionization rate is considerable: in educational services it is 74 per cent, in public administration 76 per cent, in health care and social assistance 54 per cent, in utilities 65 per cent, and in construction 31 per cent. Workers in all these industries receive much greater public credit from politicians and others for building the economy and keeping society running than bankers do.
