The new Bears head coach offered an opportunity, and challenge, for everyone on his roster.

head coach for nearly two months now, and says he’s reached out to nearly every player that is under contract for next season. One would assume he’d want to talk football with his new players, to start shedding light on his philosophies and expectations, but to start, Eberflus says he’s focused on getting to know his players as people.

But there was one message Eberflus wanted to relay to his players: they’ve all got clean slates. That goes for younger players trying to make a name for themselves, and established veterans alike. Every player will have the opportunity to prove himself again. “I told a lot of guys, ‘Hey, you're walking on fresh grass here,’” Eberflus said. “This is a new staff, new systems. You have to learn it.

“When they come in, they'll have to understand that and they will understand it pretty quick and it's going to be a little bit different for them, but refreshing.” It’s something both he and defensive coordinator Alan Williams一 who coached under Eberflus in Indianapolis一 have mentioned before. They believe in their system, and point to the Colts’ defensive success as proof. But they acknowledge there will be some growing pains, and not everyone will be on board to start. In the end, both Eberflus and Williams are confident the players will buy in, and they’ll elevate their play as a team.
