Fans have long wondered why Hordak originally abducted She-Ra, but one He-Man adaptation answered the question of her surprisingly dark origin.
Despite decades of mystery, one Masters of the Universe adaptation actually confirmed the real reason Hordak abducted the infant She-Ra. For the first two decades of her life, She-Ra grew up under Hordak’s oppressive thumb, rising through the ranks to become one of his most feared soldiers.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY By the mid-1980s, the Masters of the Universe toy-line was a top-seller, spurred in part by a highly successful cartoon - no coincidence, as the cartoon was created precisely to help sell the toys. Mattel, the toys’ manufacturer, decided to create a spin-off line, this one aimed at young girls. She-Ra: Princess of Power debuted in 1985 and was an immediate success.
She-Ra's Origin Is Surprisingly Dark Here, the story gives a dark twist to She-Ra’s origin - she was not abducted randomly. Instead, it was a targeted attack by Hordak against an ancient enemy. Hordak had been defeated by King Grayskull and his revenge would not be denied. Rather than kill the descendants of Grayskull, Hordak wanted to corrupt them - to infect them with his evil presence and make them just like him. This is a far more insidious plan, and one that nearly came to fruition.
The Comics Corrected a Television Mistake The original Masters of the Universe and She-Ra cartoons were short on backstory Modern incarnations of the franchise, particularly the comics, have addressed this, fleshing out the rich world of Eternia. Keith Giffen and Pop Mhan gave She-Ra this treatment, revealing the real, tragic reason Hordak abducted her.
