The number – for five months of the year – far outstrips the 8,394 approvals in the whole of 2021, and the 5,409 approvals in 2020 – two years that were heavily impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdowns on travel in both South Africa and New Zealand. The stats body’s data shows that 27,852 applications are currently on-hand, awaiting a decision.
