In the aftermath of Gabriel Wortman's shooting spree that left 22 people dead on April 18 and 19, 2020, the federal government initially decided to hold a review of the mass killings. But a wave of intense public backlash in July 2020 convinced Ottawa to call for a full public inquiry, which had been demanded by families of the victims and many other Nova Scotians and Canadians affected by the rampage.
The interim report did not provide any conclusions or recommendations but it did summarize the 13-hour rampage by the gunman, a Dartmouth denturist whose 22 victims included an expectant mother.The 22 victims of the mass shooting, from left to right. As required in its mandate, the final report will include the commission’s thorough analysis and review of:communications with the public during and after the event;police policies, procedures and training; and“The broad mandate of the commission warrants a comprehensive final report,” senior commission lawyer Emily Hill said in the release. “The recommendations are intended to assist people across our governments, institutions and communities to begin to take action right away.
