Thrawn is one of the Star Wars franchise's most popular non-movie characters. Why did Marvel wait so long to bring him into their comics?
The iconic Star Wars Legends character Grand Admiral Thrawn is due to make his long-awaited live-action debut, yet Marvel Comics was not initially interested in including him in its comics. Thrawn debuted in Timothy Zahn’s Heir to the Empire, the first book of the Legends-era Thrawn Trilogy that was popularly seen as the original Star Wars sequel trilogy by many.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT In an interview with Looper, Heather Antos discusses her initial pitches to Marvel that would have brought Thrawn into the post-2014 canon. While Lucasfilm supported the idea, Antos says Marvel was not interested, keeping its focus on major original trilogy characters like Luke Skywalker instead.
After Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2014, the old Expanded Universe and Thrawn with it were relegated to an alternate timeline. Despite Thrawn’s popularity, the Legends continuity is, ultimately, far more niche than the current canon, making Marvel’s initial hesitance perhaps understandable, as casual Star Wars fans would likely be unfamiliar with him. Thrawn’s success in the new canon, however, proves that Heather Antos was right to suggest bringing him into the new continuity.
Thrawn is already a beloved character in the hearts and minds of Star Wars Legends devotees and his reintroduction to the post-2014 canon continuity has only further popularized him as new generations of Star Wars fans learn about the sinister military genius.
