Iron Man’s past issues are what makes him relatable, but after all these years as a hero, Marvel should let him overcome them and finally evolve as a person.

Marvel Comics seems to have a big issue with Iron Man. Despite the decades spent being a successful superhero, apparently, Tony Stark will never get rid of his personal issues and he will always perceive himself as a failure, as proved by Iron Man #18, by Christopher Cantwell, Lan Medina, and Frank D'Armata.

It is hard for superheroes to have actual character development. The continuous, serialized nature of superhero comics means that publishers, editors, and authors are always wary of changing a character too much. After all, the formula for the most successful characters remained the same for decades, and it worked for the most part. However, there is also another side of the coin.

In Iron Man #18, Tony comes to terms with his actions after acquiring the Power Cosmic and becoming the Iron God. Nearly omnipotent, he was still dragged down by his past, especially his relationship with his father Howard. Unable to accept criticism of his choices, Tony ended up killing some of his closest friends. He realizes that his main goal in life has always been to not feel worthless."If I wasn't the absolute best, to my father I was invisible", Tony says.

Marvel decided to keep portraying Tony Stark as stuck in an endless cycle of errors and regret, as further proved by his recent relapse into alcoholism. While his vulnerability made the character more relatable to readers over the years, it is now stopping him from evolving, thus obtaining the opposite effect. To truly make him relatable, Marvel Comics should just let Iron Man overcome some of his past issues and stop portraying him as a failure.
