Despite receiving 10 nominations, 'Killers of the Flower Moon' failed to win any awards at the Oscars, making it the second film in history to achieve this feat. Director Martin Scorsese now holds the dubious honor of helming two films with 10 nominations and no wins.
Inevitably, the Oscars miss many of the great films in any given year, even in this decadent era of ten-nominee best picture lists. (Whither my beloved “Asteroid City,” wholly neglected this year!) But there’s something especially brutal about seeing the cast and crew of a really solid movie leave empty-handed.
That was the case for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which came in with 10 nominations and left without a single win – not even for Lily Gladstone, who lost best actress to Emma Stone in what was arguably the night’s biggest upset. Notoriously, two films have fared worse: “The Color Purple” and “The Turning Point,” each with 11 nominations and zero statues. But “Killers” grants Martin Scorsese a dubious honor. He is now the first director to have helmed two films that were nominated for ten awards but won none, a feat that he previously pulled off with “Gangs of New York.
