Consumer champion Martin Lewis appeared on Good Morning Britain to remind means-tested benefits recipients about upcoming cost of living payments. He also urged pensioners on a low income to check for a crucial benefit that can provide access to the payments.
Martin Lewis appeared on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday to remind eight million people on means-tested benefits that £300 cost of living payments are due to land in their bank accounts between now and November 19. The consumer champion also urged nearly one million pensioners on a low income to check for an “absolutely crucial benefit ” worth thousands of pounds which can also provide access to the cost of living payments .
“My rule of thumb on it, it’s not exact and I’m not telling people they are eligible, but if you’re a single pensioner earning less than £220 per week or you’re a pensioner couple earning less than £320 per week, then you should check out if you’re eligible. However, as Martin explained, it also means new claims for Pension Credit made before mid-December, which later turn out to be successful, will also qualify for the £300 payment - even if their benefit award is just a few pence.
Mixed aged older couples and Pension Credit In May 2019, the law changed so a ‘mixed age couple’ - a couple where one partner is of State Pension age and the other is under it - are considered to be a ‘working age’ couple when checking entitlement to means-tested benefits. There’s also an option to print off the answers you give using the calculator tool to help you complete the application form quicker without having to look out the same details again. Try the Pension Credit Calculator for yourself or your family member to make sure you’re receiving all the financial support you are entitled to claim.
