Some parents believe the school summer holiday should be shortened in favour of longer half term and Easter holidays
The days are getting longer and the sun is coming out for at least 20-minute intervals, meaning one thing and one thing only: the six-week school summer break is on its way. And while holidaying with the kids and six weeks off school runs can be a treat, calls of ‘what’s for lunch?’ and mum, I’m bored’ throughout each day while trying to work can get tiring.
Taking to X, Martin Lewis asked parents for their thoughts about the current summer holiday length, and whether school holidays should be shortened – and parents were divided. In the replies, many noted how expensive it is to take children away in the summer holidays due to travel companies adding huge premiums.One reply said: ‘as a kid, six weeks off in summer was SO DULL. A month off at Christmas would be better, as you’ve got all this new stuff to play with. And it’d save the schools a fortune in heating.’
One parent explained that the holiday is hugely important for personal development. She said: ‘have watched three kids grow up & benefit from six weeks holiday. They use it to process and develop in ways they can’t while marching to the school beat.’ While another comment read: ‘May half term would interfere with exam testing. Who wants extra days in winter Oct or Feb. Personally I’d prefer Scotland’s break from early July to mid August.’A report by the Nuffield Foundation published earlier this year that looked at education inequalities in post-pandemic times suggested a shake up to school holidays.
