The consumer expert has issued guidance for those on the standard energy tariff to ensure they're not left out of pocket when prices rise at the start of October
Martin Lewis is encouraging those on the standard tariff to switch and secure a fixed deal before energy bills surge by 10 per cent from the beginning of October. Ofgem has confirmed that annual energy bills for millions of households on the standard tariff, with typical average usage, will rise from £1,568 to £1,717 from October 1 - an increase of £149 over the coming year.
However, the consumer champion urged some caution before making the switch. He clarified: "Don't just jump on any fix though - if you're going to lock in you want to grab the cheapest for your use and location, so use a whole-of-market comparison, like MSE's Cheap Energy Club, and find out who will let you fix for less."
Martin also issued a warning for pensioners who aren't eligible for Winter Fuel Payments because they don't receive income-related benefits like Pension Credit, stating that they will need to find "hundreds of pounds more than last winter". Martin Lewis hit out, saying: "Last year, pensioner homes got up to £300 extra per household cost of living support - that's gone, and its loss alone is far bigger than the savings made by slightly lower rates. Piling on top of that is the Government's new decision to means-test Winter Fuel Payments, that will leave all except usually those who claim Pension Credit missing out on a further £200 to £300.
