Aiden Markram's resolute batting leads South Africa's fightback against Pakistan's dominance on Day Two of the first Test.

Proteas opener Aiden Markram held firm in the first session of day 2 of the first Test between South Africa and Pakistan at SuperSport Park on Friday. South Africa trail Pakistan by 31 runs at the lunch interval on Day Two of the first Test at SuperSport Park in Centurion. Resuming from an overnight score of 82/3, captain Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram took to the middle in cloudy conditions in Centurion.

With seamer Mohammad Abbas consistently bowling probing lines and lengths, giving very little away, Bavuma and Markram had to absorb pressure in the first hour of play. The two batters executed expertly as they left deliveries outside the line of off-stump while punishing the half volleys. Markram unleashed his glorious cover drives and backfoot punches through the covers while Bavuma assumed the accumulator role as the pair combined for 70-runs for the fourth-wicket partnership. With less than an hour remaining in the session, Bavuma (31) chased a ball on the fourth stump line, got the outside edge on it and made his way to the dugout as the visitors crawled their way back into the contest. With Bavuma back in the pavilion, Markram remained resolute, understanding that he needed to have the entire batting line-up bat around him for the hosts to put up a competitive first innings total. On the stroke of lunch, having put together a 40-run partnership with Markram (81*), David Bedingham (30) was undone by Naseen Sham (1/45).Shah bowled a length delivery just outside off stump, enticing Bedingham to a backfoot punch only to get an edge straight to the safe hands of Kamran Ghulam at first slip to tilt the session in the balance between the two teams. Going into the second session, with Markram and Kyle Verreynne the last remaining batters, Pakistan will be backing themselves that one more wicket could tilt the game in their favour
