Maritzburg made five changes following their last-gasp defeat to Sekhukhune United, as Alfred Ndengane, Wayde Jooste, Bonginkosi Makume, Karim Kimvuidi and Tumelo Njoti were recalled.
The Team of Choice started brightly, as they created a number of chances in the opening exchanges that were close but did not bring goalkeeper Salim Magoola to action. However, Vasili Manousakis' charges pounced on a counter-attack immediately from that action, as Sanele Barns broke the deadlock with a strike from just outside the box after he was put through on goal by Hlongwa and Richards Bay went to the break with a narrow lead.
However, Maritzburg could not gain momentum as they were met by resistance from Richards Bay and on the hour-mark Fadlu Davids reinforced his attack with a tactical change as Amadou Soukouna replaced Mogamad De Goede and Orlando Pirates loanee Kwame Peprah was also thrown into the fray in place of Samu.
