The Super Mario Bros. Movie is smashing box office records once held by Disney, but this shouldn’t be surprising considering Universal has held the animated box office throne since the pandemic. Disney has long been the reigning animation studio at the box office, as the company has produced eight of the ten highest-grossing animated films of all time, which includes multiple installments of Frozen and Toy Story.

Movie’s box office records are dethroning Disney’s titles and past video game adaptations, with the 2023 Illumination film gearing up to cross $1 billion at the global box office. Not only does the Mario adaptation hold the record for the biggest global opening for an animated movie, but it also has the second-best weekend for any animated movie.
The last time Disney’s highest-grossing animated movie of a given year beat that of Universal was in 2019, which saw Disney’s The Lion King remake , Frozen II and Toy Story 4 earn significantly more than Universal's How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and The Secret Life of Pets 2 . However, 2020 saw a massive shift in the animated box office climate, with Universal continuing to hold the top spot.
Why Universal's Animated Movies Keep Beating Disney At The Box Office While the pandemic can be partially responsible for 2020’s box office rivalry, Universal has surpassed Disney by a wide margin in subsequent years. One reason is that many of Disney’s animated movies are expected to stream on Disney Plus around 45 days after their theatrical premieres, which decreases incentives to see the films in theaters.
Additionally, Universal has launched sequels to massive franchises during prime release windows, whereas some of Disney’s big animated releases since 2020 haven’t been part of established series and were poorly marketed to audiences, as was the case with the box office bomb Strange World. Universal’s hit animated movies like Sing 2, Minions: The Rise of Gru, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and The Super Mario Bros.
