Mario Batali 'will no longer profit' from his restaurants via nparts
After leaving day-to-day operations in 2017 following sexual misconduct allegations, celebrity chef Mario Batali “will no longer profit” from his restaurant empire, The New York Times reports.
The Batali & Bastianich Hospitality Group, which Batali owned with primary partner Joe Bastianich, will cease operations. Its 16 restaurants – including Babbo and Del Posto in New York City – will operate under a new, yet-to-be-named company helmed by Joe’s sister, Tanya Bastianich Manuali. This announcement marks the end of a 20-year partnership between Batali and the Bastianich family, with Tanya and Joe reportedly buying out the entirety of Batali’s shares in the restaurants. Acclaimed LA-based chef Nancy Silverton and Lidia Bastianich, chef and owner of New York City’s Felidia will also partner in the new company.
Tanya has a PhD in art history from Oxford University, and while she has produced Lidia’s cooking shows, managed restaurants and co-written seven cookbooks, she had previously kept a low profile in the company. “I never planned to come back,” she told the Times. “The pull of a family business can be strong.”
Batali is also apparently in the midst of selling his stake in Eataly, the luxury Italian marketplace with locations from Torino to Tokyo . “Eataly is in the process of acquiring Mr. Batali’s minority interest in Eataly USA,” Chris Giglio, a spokesperson for the company, told the Times.
