SASSA confirms March 2025 Old-Age Grant payments while President Ramaphosa hints at future SRD expansions. The agency faces challenges including court rulings, appeals, and internal disagreements regarding grant expansion. Beneficiaries are advised to apply in person at their nearest SASSA office.

The South African Social Security Agency ( SASSA ) has confirmed that March 2025 Old-Age Grants will be paid out as scheduled. This reassurance comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa's State of the Nation Address (SONA) hinted at future expansions of the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, raising uncertainty about the future of existing grants. While the President has repeatedly promised a future where SRD evolves into a more substantial 'Big Grant,' the specifics remain unclear.

The current state of SASSA faces several challenges. The department is grappling with a backlog of applications, understaffing, and conflicting directives from various stakeholders. Last month, a court ruling ordered the government to consult with the National Treasury on expanding SRD grants to include all applicants. However, the Department of Social Development (DSD) and National Treasury have announced their intention to appeal this judgment. Despite these internal struggles, SASSA continues to process applications for the March 2025 Old-Age Grants. Beneficiaries are advised to visit their nearest SASSA office in person to apply. They will need to provide documentation such as proof of residence, a declaration of private pension (if applicable), an Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) membership book or discharge certificate, and a copy of their will if their spouse has passed away within the last five years. The agency emphasizes that beneficiaries will not have to reapply for old-age benefits once approved. However, SASSA reserves the right to periodically review their status. All eyes will now be on Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana's Budget Speech on February 19th to gain a clearer understanding of the future trajectory of SASSA grants in 2025.
