When he questioned his mom, she admitted truth: The troubled man whose murder had turned their lives upside down wasn’t his biological dad.

Thanks to a bit of spit, a tube and the science of DNA, a Maple Ridge machinist has found the father he never knew.

Together for 22 years, Melanie knew Darrell’s story from the start. The couple had two children, Noah, now 9 and Abigail, 4 and although they had found stability and happiness, said Melanie, something was missing. She wanted to help her husband heal from his past —and that meant finding Darrell’s father, Doug Sherk.“I looked up every Sherk,” said Melanie on the phone with Postmedia News. “I contacted people all over the world: Pennsylvania, Idaho, Ontario.

“I was in disbelief I had been searching so long, to finally see him in person, and to see how happy he was, accepting and eager meant so much,” said Darrell.
