Pest extradordinaire Brad Marchand accomplished not one but two goals during the regular season, hitting 100 points for the first time and running the 82-game gauntlet without earning a single suspension from the NHL’s department of player safety.
“I tried pretty hard to get away from that this year, and I thought I did for the most part, so I’m not going to be looking to do that at all,” said Marchand, holding court Wednesday. “Where we excel is just playing the game and allowing our skill and talent to take over.” Although the Bruins’ top line did register a team and career high in penalty minutes , he believes the game is shifting in the direction of the identity of his Round 1 opponent: low on hits, high on speed.
“You can’t be like a dinosaur in the game. Be too physical, you get suspended for everything you do, and it adds to penalties,” Marchand said. “That’s where Toronto excels, allowing its skills and talent to come through. That’s the way the game has gone.” Leafs coach Mike Babcock, arriving jacked up Thursday, coached Marchand on Team Canada. He was asked if he’s buying the narrative that the man who famously licked Ryan Callahan from chin to forehead in his most recent playoff series has been reformed.“Marchy is a talented player. I enjoyed him. He’s a huntin’ guy as well. We had lots to talk about there,” Babcock said.
