It's not just power lines that were downed after post-tropical storm Fiona - so were sap lines. But even more heartbreaking are the decades-old maple trees on land that can't be salvaged by some maple producers.
EARLTOWN, N.S. — Some maple producers in Nova Scotia are reporting more than 50 per cent of damages while a few are unlikely to recover after post-tropical storm Fiona.
All of their tubing – about $4,000 worth – is not salvageable. They are moving to another stand on their 90-acre property and are once again starting from scratch. He estimates he will need about $6,000 in tubing to reach the new section. “We can pick up from this and walk away, but my property will never have those 1,000 trees back in my lifetime or my kids’ lifetime either,” said Noble.
“Normally walking up here, it's pretty shady with just a little bit of light coming through the trees,” said MacNutt. “The trees have blown down. Everywhere you look . But the lines aren’t so bad – it's the trees. Those were my lifetime .” At Maple Mist Farm, where MacLeod works, they have lost about 300 trees, mostly near the ridge of the hill.
