Communities under evacuation order Wednesday included Foresthill, Four Acres, Michigan Bluff, Chicken Hawk, Gorman Ranch and Volcanoville.
The Mosquito Fire, which started Tuesday afternoon on the Middle Fork of the American River, has prompted mandatory evacuations in Placer and El Dorado counties.
The first evacuations were announced Tuesday night and expanded to cover 120 square miles on both sides of Foresthill Road, including the communities of Foresthill, Four Acres, Michigan Bluff, Chicken Hawk, Gorman Ranch and Volcanoville. Amid record high temperatures and critically low fuel moisture levels, the fire grew rapidly and “exhibited extreme behavior,” the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said. During the hottest part of Wednesday, it went from 2,000 acres shortly before 3 p.m. to 4,223 acres at 5:15 p.m.
