Minerals and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe says coal will be with us for many years to come. The minister was speaking at the fully physical Africa Energy Indaba that kicked off on Tuesday morning at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

Mantashe’s speech was interrupted by a small group of Greenpeace demonstrators who stood in front of the stage with anti-coal placards.

"I can tell you that it’s not going to save us because it has limitations. It doesn’t have baseload. It depends on partnering with other technologies to provide sustainable energy supply and security." Mantashe said the transition to lower carbon emissions had to be just and not leave out communities who are solely dependent on coal for survival.

Africa must not succumb to encirclement by developed economies that continue to put pressure on our continent to move away from all forms of fossil fuels at a pace and scale determined by them.
