Colourful parades, Queer Asian takeovers and a Brazilian drag superstar make for a lively Pride Saturday
A few minutes past midday, a huge maypole with the colours of the rainbow flag turns the corner on Deansgate boldly telling the hundreds who have lined the streets that they are gathered here today to celebrate the Queerly Beloved.
Following the parade - which lasted around two and a half hours - there was more jubilation to be had in the Gay Village, where bars and clubs hosted their own stages of entertainment. Manchester Pride’s three stages, meanwhile, featured local and international performers throughout the day headlined at the end of the night by Brazilian drag superstar Pabllo Vittar and Alison Goldfrapp.
But the day-long takeover was temporarily forced to halt as thunderstorms passed by. But after 45 minutes, the likes of Shanika Sunrise, Mild Peril, Bollyqueer, and House of Spice mother Lucky Roy Singh returned for a rousing and joyful performance. Speaking to crowds, Lucky said: “All Asians can shine if we bring each other up.”
Over on the Village stage at Sackville Car Park, artists like Black Peppa, Jodie Harsh and Tom Aspaul entertained crowds ahead of the evening’s headliners Pabllo Vittar and Alison Goldfrapp.
