Andy Burnham is now a member of the Old Trafford stadium regeneration task force as Man United seek funds for a new stadium.

Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham admits he is at risk of alienating City supporters amid his involvement in plans to regenerate Old Trafford.

"Yes, there are those risks but I have supported City and the city region has supported Manchester City and they have put a lot of funding into East Manchester and that should be recognised.READ MORE: Players in the stands react as expected to Fernandes moment vs Everton "No other city in the world would be set up in terms of its football infrastructure to Manchester. No one would come close. This is why I will give this task force everything we have got to help because the benefits to our city region are massive if we unlock them. It’s not for show."

"This idea about it paying for the stadium... that’s such a simplistic debate," Burnham said. "It is about the wider enabling. If Sir Jim goes big with his vision, we will need transport infrastructure to support it, we will need to put investment in ours to support that so the jobs can come in around it. That’s what is at stake here.

"It is too much of a narrow debate to say how much has the club got and who is paying for the stadium. It is much bigger than that and I think you need to see it in that way otherwise people won’t understand what is at stake here.
