The north west has been named the worst in the country for hospital roofs built with the dangerous concrete
Dangerous crumbling concrete has been used in a number of Greater Manchester hospitals, but current government plans will not see the removal of the material from all affected sites for another 12 years.
More than 100 schools, including seven in Greater Manchester, were contacted about the issue days before the start of the new school year. Now, hospital bosses confirmed it had been found in other Greater Manchester NHS buildings not previously reported. "In response, actions have been taken and a permanent solution is currently at the planning stage. It's important to confirm that this is not a public or clinical area, and that none of our services are impacted. The building has been made safe and full monitoring is in place to maintain the safety of our patients, visitors and staff.
Hospitals in Greater Manchester are preparing for it to take many years before the concrete is removed, including the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust - which runs the units in Oldham and Salford. Health chiefs say they are constantly monitoring the situation and removal of the concrete should take place before 2035.
Nationally, 27 NHS sites have been confirmed to have RAAC plank construction. Through this remediation programme, RAAC has been completely eradicated in three of these, according to the government. An NHS spokesperson added: "The presence of RAAC affects a minority of trusts, and where it has been identified there are mitigations and local maintenance programmes in place, in line with expert guidance from the Institution of Structural Engineers, to maintain safety for staff, patients and visitors and ensure patients can continue to receive the best possible care.
"The hospital estate is mainly concentrated in a smaller number of larger buildings with dedicated teams of trained estates professionals who monitor and maintain them. Where mitigation work is required, this can be carried out with relatively minimal service disruption in hospital settings where patients can be relocated to different wards if necessary.
