They were living in Home Office-approved accommodation

An asylum seeker who fled war-torn East Sudan to settle in Nottingham knifed a fellow resident at Home Office-approved accommodation in Sneinton Boulevard. After his own struggles following the death of his parents in a terrible house fire, Yehya Mahdi sought asylum in the UK and was housed with the victim, who were both awaiting a decision on their right to remain here, in Sneinton Boulevard.

"It's right to say there were some tensions within the home," explained Katrina Wilson, prosecuting. A video was recorded by Mahdi in his room the day before the stabbing and showed the defendant banging on a door and saying, "to Hell with you, your religion and Libya".The victim had to call police about the defendant leading up to the January 14 attack. Mahdi armed himself with a bread knife after downing 12 cans of booze.

Mahdi stabbed him to the side of his forehead - but he bravely tried to disarm him. "The defendant persisted and tried to stab him in the collarbone area, whilst saying the words, 'I will kill you'," added Miss Wilson. Officers arrived and the victim was in and out of consciousness and he remained in intensive care until the following day. He spent five days in hospital before discharge and has since relocated in this country.Inside the blood-splattered house, police found Mahdi. He immediately lay on the floor with his hands behind him and was handcuffed and arrested.
