Liam O'Pray denies murdering Rico Burton, 31, in Altrincham
Liam O’Pray is accused of murdering Rico Burton, 31, in Altrincham town centre during the early hours of August 21 of last year. The 22-year-old denies the charge, as well as an allegation of wounding with intent against another man, Harvey Reilly, who was also seriously injured in the incident.
Mr O'Pray returned to the Goose Green area shortly before 3am and attempted to enter King Pong on his own, the court heard. Mr Burton and his family friends were in the vicinity at the time, Mr Brady said. Shortly afterwards, prosecutors allege that Mr O'Pray and another man, Malachi Hewitt-Brown, became embroiled in an argument with a group of people outside the bar. Charlene Ellis, a bouncer called in to deal with the trouble, described the two men as 'crazy' and said they both wanted to fight another man, Tommy Scott, the court heard.
As Mr Burton threw a punch at Mr Hewitt-Brown, Mr O'Pray is alleged to have plunged the knife into the side of his neck. After being punched to the head by another man, jurors heard that Mr O'Pray began 'indiscriminatingly waving the knife backwards and forwards', slashing Mr Reilly to his arm and chest.
