Police responding to reports of a man firing a gun near a NJ Transit station in Passaic City late Wednesday shot the man and took him to a hospital, where he remained in stable condition, officials said. Several people called police about 6:30 p.m. to report a man firing a weapon in the area of Passaic Avenue and Lackawanna Place, according to city Mayor Hector Lora.
“Reports stating that the man shooting the gun in the area were in fact confirmed,” Lora said. Police wounded the man while taking him into custody and his injuries were not considered to be life-threatening, Lora said.Police recovered the gun allegedly used by the man, Lora said. The man’s name and information about charges were not released.“The immediate and heroic response of our Passaic police officer prevented any further injuries or tragedies,” Lora said.
NJ Transit tweeted that trains were bypassing the Passaic station following the shooting. Service resumed about 11 p.m. Wednesday night.— Main-Bergen County Line
