Nanaimo Mounties were called out to reports of a man and woman fighting in the middle of Haliburton Street at about 2 pm Saturday

Nanaimo Mounties were called out to reports of a man and woman fighting outside a vehicle in the middle of Haliburton Street near Highview Terrace at about 2 p.m. Saturday.

By the time officers arrived, the man had allegedly pulled out a weapon. “Shots were fired by police and the man was injured,” said Nanaimo RCMP spokesperson Dawn Roberts in a statement about the incident. Despite life-saving efforts by paramedics, the man died at the scene. Roberts said no one else was injured.The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. were called in to look into the actions of police, while the RCMP are still investigating the altercation that led up to the man’s death.
