A Toms River man was killed Sunday evening when he was struck by a vehicle on Route 37 after crashing a Harley-Davidson motorcycle he was learning to operate, Toms River police said in a statement. Nicholas Cacciapaglia, 24, died at the scene of the 7:30 p.m. crash on the westbound side of the highway near Roosevelt Avenue.
Police said their investigation shows Cacciapaglia was learning to ride a Harley in the parking lot of the Ocean County Power Sports store when he lost control of the vehicle and it struck a curb and then went onto Route 37. The bike went down and Cacciapaglia slid into the center lane, where he was struck by a passing vehicle driven by a 62-year-old township man.
The driver showed no signs of impairment, and no charges have been filed as police continue to investigate, the department said., and they do not sell or deal in Harley-Davidson motorcycles.Route 37 west near Roosevelt Avenue in Toms River.
