Oliver Pugh had boasted to a girl he planned to rob a taxi driver - and brutally stabbed Mohammed Istakhar to death

The man who killed a taxi driver in a knife attack threatened to punch a person in court as he was jailed for life with a minimum of 27 years. Birmingham Crown Court was told that Oliver Pugh, 20, murdered Mohammed Istakhar in Solihull after he got picked up on a night out.

BirminghamLive reported that Pugh was stunned at the sentence , repeating the term and shaking his head as he was led out of the dock at Birmingham Crown Court this morning. That prompted a member of the public gallery to respond ‘you’re a murderer you little [expletive]’ to which Pugh mumbled his own reply threatening ‘I’ll punch you’.

The previous night the pair had been in Rosies bar on Broad Street in Birmingham city centre. While there Pugh struck up a conversation with a girl he had never met before, who would prove a key witness in the case. Mark Heywood KC, prosecuting, said: “She met the two defendants inside Rosies bar. She had the impression Luca De-Fazio seemed familiar to her although she couldn’t place him. Mr Pugh was a stranger to her.

Reading an emotional statement in court today the victim’s daughter Mariam Hijab said: “Why did he have to pick these two idiots up? Why did it have to be our father? He didn’t deserve this at all?” Pugh drove off in the taxi., but crashed into a hedge. Pugh moved on to Nottinghamshire where he hid in a caravan for a week until he was arrested. Two members of the public found Mr Istakhar face down in the road and lifeless within hours of the stabbing.

“Anyone who stabs someone in the chest with a large knife as you did can have no other intent other than to kill. Furthermore when he managed to escape from the taxi and from you and run off down the road you hunted him down.
