Defender Ruben Dias made a long-awaited return from injury as did Phil Foden, with Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan restored from the Tottenham Hotspur defeat.
Gundogan did get in on target around minutes to the break when he pounced on a loose ball from an assist by Erling Braut Haaland and finished from point-blank range.
